One afternoon in 1944, Trader Vic pulled a bottle of seventeen-year-old J. Wray & Nephew Jamaican rum off the shelf and changed the world of cocktails forever. With his hallmark light touch, he added freshly squeezed lime juice, Dutch orange curacao, a splash of sugar syrup, and a dash of French orgeat syrup. He shook it all together with crushed ice and served the world its first Mai Tai. The drink remains the Holy Grail of the Trader, and since that day, Trader Vic's restaurants worldwide have served more than seven million of them.
Today, you can order a Mai Tai anywhere on the planet-though unless you're at Trader Vic's, you can never be sure what you'll get. A word to the wise: this is not an anything-goes tropical fruit punch. Its ingredients are few and simple, and their quality and proportions are everything.
